Regarding the Seagate 8TB Archive HDD;
The reviews from customers online who have purchased and used these drives are less than rosy. Since these are the first generation of SMR drives out to market I would avoid them in any enterprise or NAS environment. I've read Amazon are using them in Glacier but no idea how they are doing parity overhead to protect from drive failures if they are as unreliable for Amazon as the end-user reviews have been so far.

I might be way out of touch, but just stumbled on this as a potentially interesting drive.
Low-cost (<$300)
8TB, 3.5"
Claiming MTBF of 800K hrs (almost 100 years of 24/7 operation) Designed/specified for 24/7 use.
Hot-plug.
5W (idle), 7.5W (read)
Available with on-drive encryption. (Wonder if that satisfies the encryption requirement of the legislation?) It's a slow-write drive, but that's no real biggie in this application.
SATA. (OK, that's no so interesting)
