[AusNOG] LR to LRL

Hi Sean,

Don't know about other brands, but Cisco at least are not like what you're describing.

1000BASE-LX/LH (up to 10km)
TX = -3 to -9.5
RX = -3 to -20

1000BASE-ZX  (up to 70km)
TX = +5 to 0
RX = -3 to -23

The ZX has slightly better RX sensitivity, but the main difference is in the output, which is higher on the ZX optics.

The greatest worry is too high output from the ZX (+5 to 0) being above the allowed receive levels on the LX (-3 to -20).

regards,
Tony.

Could always just attenuate the input of the 1k optic to be on the safe side to keep it in the optics receive-sensitivity mid-range. Maybe a 3db or 5db attenuator?

>From what I understand, receive optics of higher km are usually more sensitive.. so i'd perhaps be just as if not more worried about the receive side of the 10km optic being bedazzled. (might need to attenuate it too).

Sean.
