Modern CPE devices really are just plug and play for IPv6. That
said there is still a lot of old code out there in IPv6 capable CPE
devices. They get their IPv6 prefixes via PD (DHCPv6) which they
then split into /64's. They configure the internal DHCPv6 server
automatically. They send out out RAs. They route the packets as
needed.
The rest of the customer IPv6 capable equipement sees the RAs and
enables IPv6 along side IPv4. This is all done without configuring
anything at the customer end.
The best thing a ISP can do is go and buy suitable IPv6 capable CPE
devices and test them. If they are happy with how they perform add
them to a "recommended CPE page". If they are not happy file a
fault report with the manufacturer. If you feel they are utter
crap take them back to the store you purchased them from and return
them. If a CPE is not up to scratch add them to the "not recommended
CPE page". Remember to also include the fireware details as bugs
do get fixed. Your customers shouldn't have to do this testing.
This will also catch configuration errors in your own equipment.
Spending a couple of hundred dollars on test CPE equipement shouldn't
be a issue for most ISPs.
