[AusNOG] Choice says using Netflix is NOT Piracy (and PayTV subscriber numbers)

Hi All,
The Ethernet connection allows downloading of on demand content AND replaces the phone line back-to-base function.
It's reasonably clever as I can select a movie / show / on demand program and the iQ box starts downloading, then tells me when it has enough buffered so I can start watching.
BTW, Foxtel pricing is very good. I have a pay TV box in Melbourne (Foxtel $109 p/m), Auckland (MySky $129 p/m), Singapore (StarHub < $100 p/m) with unlimited high speed internet (78 channels but mostly all the stuff that's in AU and NZ anyway, except no SkyNews and they show a cut down version of ABC TV which is awful).
Not sure about PayTV subscribers being on the decline...
Foxtel announced a 5% increase for 2014 and are forecasting further growth for 2015.
SkyTV NZ subscribers up 18,400, revenue up 24 million.
Starhub Singapore revenue down by 1% but subscribers remained steady at 533,000 indicating pricing / packages had reduced for the same customers.
Need to remember this list is archived publicly and the things we say here are readable by the general public.
DM.

Ummmmmm tech needs to go back to tech school.
The two cables are for vertical and horizontal signals from the LMB.

According to foxtel tech. standard foxtel is one way.
IQ, on demand etc etc etc etc is all two way. (hence the two cables vs 1 for standard).

Hi Ben,
Unless something massive changed with IQ, it's one way sat.
If I'm wrong and know more than I, I'd love to hear from you -just to sayisfy my own curiosity.

The new pricing goes live november 3. In anticipation for it they halved prices this week just past (ended last night midnight.)
I have signed up for said service to see if its worth the $24 a month. Thus far, with the IQ thing, its not "bad". however the on demand stuff requied huge load times over slow ADSL. (cant they use the sat link since it seems 2-way).
To answer you question, everyone gets moved onto new pricing with the new IQ box on november 3.
New channels, (like 50 new ones). Showtime is getting moved to its own "game of thrones tax" group.
theres a giz article on it if you can google.

Orlly?
Was/is that applied to all current subscribers? I haven't had Foxtel for a few years now but my folks have had it since the mid 90's or whenever it came out. Would be keen to know if they have to do something to get the better pricing.

Just watching channel ABC's Morning News show (815am AEST Tueasday 9/9/2014)
Choice CEO Alan Kirkland was just on TV telling viewers that their opinion is that using Netflix is NOT illegal and that the government needs to do something to make it more clear.
He seemed to be rather articulate and understood you need a VPN (mostly) to access content, but that users are PAYING for content and essentially that they should not be considered pirates.
He also mentioned that Foxtel and others mark up content to Australians anywhere up to 300-400%.
It is a very good thing that these issues are getting more widespread publicity... the more the better.
