I got burned badly on APC support & service about 18 months ago (badly so, happy to discuss off-list).

My preference these days is for Liebert/Emerson.

If you're looking at remote management, the APC Network Cards seem to be a little more mature and feature rich than the equivalent Eaton offerings. They also give you the ability to tweak voltage and frequency settings remotely, something that Eaton don't let you do yet.

However, if you're looking at service and support, Eaton are well ahead of APC (at least here in Perth).

Would suggest avoiding the 5PX and looking at a 9130-series instead, since from memory the cost difference wasn't much but you end up with a full online UPS instead of a line-interactive model.

Subject: [AusNOG] UPS Recommendations - Small office

Hi all,

Looking to pick up a UPS for a small office setup. Wanted to ask the collective opinion for advice or recommendations on what they recommend or have used in the past. Nothing too major, just enough to prevent short power issues (~15-30 minutes and above) and with the potential for monitoring. I've heard good things about the Eaton 5PX series and APC Smart UPS for small office setups.

Essentially it's just handling the power for:

- 4 Switches
- Firewall
- Server

Does anyone have any recommendations? (Off or on-list is ok)

Cheers,

Dugald
