[AusNOG] Metadata retention... it's now (almost) a thing

I suppose Ben that they don’t support the views of everyone as they claim, having to retain more data which we shouldn’t need to retain isn’t helping anybody really.

The main issue is that the amendments are very unclear, there is no definition about what is or isn’t required, what needs to be kept and exactly how much of it except the general timeframe of 2 years,  so these people are going to approve something that is grey, and not black and white, this just opens up the doors for them to push more and more onto carriers to make their jobs harder and more expensive to do.

It’s like the current interception requirements, it’s not like they say we need you to do this, this and this, it’s that they want to know what you can do and are offering to do, once you tell them that they come back to you and ask you for more or are content with what you say you can do, it’s so open ended.

I agree that some things will already be done by most people, but even now we are seeing interception requests for trivial things which take time and effort, look at the reports lately about that, imagine if every other week we get asked for certain information from logs just because they think something is going on, everything is just terror terror terror, scare scare scare.

I don’t think it’s being unreasonable to think that this is just an effort by the government to push something through without too much thought about it to try and show that they are doing something and get brownie points.

According to the Communications Alliance, we all support it...

So, I guess form another industry group thingo and say we don't?
