cost / revenue in terms of energy would be interesting as well. Would they actually produce more 'green' energy in the equipment's lifecycle than the amount of energy necessary to build them?

Perhaps rather than FTTx the govt should have rolled out TTP Tunnel to the Premises.

Put in a nice big dedicated service duct to everyone's house.
Run everything through it power/water/sewer/data.
(I did say big right?)
Fibre on demand would be pretty easy then, it might even be feasible to have multiple competing providers in a region, and the govt could collect lease money from the service providers.
