[AusNOG] Mixing tech stuff

I like the *idea* of solar roadways but i can see lots of big issues
actually doing it.
Mainly the amount of concrete in the underlying foundation.
Existing roads (at least most of them as a % of surface area) are
basically gravel on dirt with a kinda flexible surface layer on top.
Whilst that sounds bad it means that in areas with clay (which is a
great deal of .au) when it rains and the road moves by an inch or 3 you
still have a smooth surface. If you put a bunch of concrete rafts in as
the ground moves under it you will get steps in the road. They go to
great lengths to avoid this on elevated motorways and the like with
massive piers and tying the segments together.
I'm also concerned about the increase in embodied energy involved in
making those roads.
In addition you are going to have all these solar cells with a decent %
under shadow which is kinda a waste.
Solar Freekin Rooftops might be a better option at least in terms of low
hanging fruit ;->
