[AusNOG] Telstra announces closure of 2G network

At work we were using Telstra GSM for M2M Applications. A few years ago mum + dad a large around Australia trip so I put a GSM based GPS tracker in their car, partly to watch their progress, partly out of curiosity to see how well GSM was working in regional areas.
The answer - it sucks. There is virtually no GSM coverage outside of cities and very large towns. Needless to say I quickly changed to using 3G radios in our products, even though at the time they were double the cost. Telsta must have been taking down the equipment as it fell out of use.
