[AusNOG] WIFI/Internet on Planes

Having onboard WiFi is a matter of cost-benefit like most things. Qantas did trial it but found very little uptake. There is also the exorbitant prices you need to pay for the satellite comms. Not to mention dependent on the flights you have no way to charge your devices.
How many would buy food/drinks if we had to pay on international flights? Would any workplace really justify the work-related expenses for the prices of onboard Internet?
It would definitely make sense for Australian domestic travel, although I’ve extensively used it on AA/Delta flights in the US and the speeds are not anything to write home about - it just cures boredom more than anything else.
FWIW, I took a SQ flight only days ago from Hong Kong->Singapore->Melbourne and thought about using the WiFi but then thought against it. ~12hrs without Internet is do-able with a good book or movie ;)

I've got a friend who is a commercial domestic airline pilot - he reckons the bottom on the cockpit window is the best place to stick your phone on hotspot mode in Boeing aircraft ;)
