Hi,
PerfSonar does provide an interface to run various network performance tests. You can use it to run scheduled or one-off tests. It's used widely on R&E networks around the world, with much development work coming out of ESNet and Internet2 (the USA equivalents of AARNet).
The BWCTL test is iperf-based and used for throughput measurements. Another, OWAMP, tests packet loss & latency - which is often sufficient to identify network problem, without filling your pipes with production-impacting iperf/BWCTL traffic.
I wouldn't say that perfSonar is a simple way of throwing up a front-end to iperf however... it takes a certain amount of effort to get it up and working. However tied in with a dashboard such as MadDash, it can provide an informative view of network-wide performance.

There was a Packet Pushers episode a while back about PerfSonar - they seemed to indicate that it included a more interesting frontend than the default iperf stuff.
My memory is a bit hazy on it though - original podcast here: http://packetpushers.net/show-163-open-source-perfsonar-finds-the-flaws-impacting-the-flows/
