[AusNOG] Sydney Underground Cables and the new Trams

Hi Skeeve,

Great question.

There should be no material change to the way cables are rolled out, but there may be positive developments from an access perspective.

Granted this is a significant project but road alterations etc are not uncommon so carriers should have policies and strategies in place to mitigate impact. For example FirstPath have already moved most of our dark fibre and layer2 services to use alternate paths and when we build our own lead-ins to buildings along the path we try not do this off George St (where possible).

This is a future event and there are many changes afoot in the industry so time will tell all.

Regards

Stephen

Good to know... and leading by example ;-)

Do you perceive any long term changes to the way cables are rolled out when there are tram tracks running down places like George St?

I realise Melbourne already does this, but their streets were designed for this and have much wider paths than Sydney.

Hey all,

Just a worthy news article that could affect infrastructure providers, and in-turn all of us.

http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/light-rail-will-run-behind-schedule-20140204-31zfl.html

It mentions Telstra and Optus, but likely affects Vocus, Pipe, Nextgen, Firstpath and others. Any of those providers interested in talking about the impact on their services?
