Having read the news.com.au article myself, I have now learnt they chose that number as some sort of ritual involving the number 512 and 1 thousand pipes.

Same thing happened when we hit 100,000 routes back in the day.

It's wasn't hardware that time, rather every man and his dog had max-prefix
set to 100,000 :)

Pretty funny really.
