It's pretty easy to explain to the general population:
P comes after N, clearly it's bigger/better/faster (etc).
But unlike in the alphabet it's not "just a small increment" to go from
N to P, you pretty much have to go back and start all over again.

I'd hazard a guess that most people would have no clue at all about the
real difference between FTTP and FTTN. I have spoken to some who are
totally unaware of what fibre to anywhere is all about.
And they vote I guess.
