I agree with you Skeeve,
Much like myself,
I have SOME hands on experience and such, but no certificates or qualifications :S
And because i do not have these nobody seems interested
I am currently looking at studying for CCNA and VCA-DCV at present, However need to find employment to pay for the exam :D
Daniel

Good people are hard to find these days.
Very rarely are good people sitting around, unemployed or not paid their worth.... otherwise they wouldn't be good. If they don't have common sense in life looking after themselves, they probably can't do it in their professional roles either.
There are also different kinds of people:
1. Raw talent with some experience (no certs or degrees)
2. Those who follow certification
3. Those with degrees (often with certs) but rarely with any experience.
Personally, in our space, I place no value on degrees at all.. They're just not the kind of people we need. In Networking, we do care about certs, or favour those willing to get them. This is only partly about the skill aspect, and more about vendor partner requirements which can help with purchasing discounts and so on - but some certs are just very good, like the new Juniper JNCSP range... excellent exams.
The guys from 1. above are good, and in some fields, certs don't matter... but they're often the hardest working of all as they know they need to prove themselves. The younger they are, the harder they are to manage. Never think a $35k guy is a good deal... you will spend another $10k-$15k just in managing them. Any GenY's and iGen's also come with their own particular way of (not) working, and management overheads.
Phillip... do you focus on a particular group, or does it depend on the role, or do you have some minimums?

Google has plenty of roles available in Sydney<https://www.google.com/about/jobs/search/?#!t=jo&jid=31172&> for appropriate candidates.
We have roles in Network Engineering, Optical Transport Engineering, Unix System Administration, Networking Software Engineers, Network Surveillance all in Sydney waiting for the right candidates.
Its strange as we're having a hard time finding people, if you have anyone you know that is pretty awesome in the above, please tell them we're looking for great people to help us out. Perk of employment is the free entry to our own monorail carriage ;-).

Gday Noggers
Thought I would take this opportunity to raise this thread again since I am still actively looking for a position in Melbourne,
I am currently seeking a junior based networking role / traineeship in the networking sector,
Possible government funding is available as an incentive,
If you would like to learn about any of my previous experience or have a chat please feel free to respond and I can send through my resume upon request.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
TIA
Daniel.

Gday Noggers,
I know this seems a bit odd, and not what this mailing list was designed for, But would get the best exposure to the industry,
I was wondering if anybody based around SouthEast Melbourne or Melbourne CBD was looking at hiring an individual to join their team in the networking industry?
Looking for a junior based network/system administrator based roles
Please reply off-list if interested or require any further information
Regards
D.
