Hi Sean
People tell me that implementing a dual stack IPv4/IPv6 network is easy
- and they are right... setting up the network *IS* easy.
But then I see a statement like yours...
>If you want a /64, sure, why not, go nuts, do your own thing with it,
but it *IS* overkill for non nerdy customers who
just-want-their-bloody-hosting-to-work.
and I am reminded once again how difficult it is for all of us to remove
and leave behind our IPv4 blinkers and enter the world of IPv6 thinking.
The natural unit of allocation in IPv6 is not an IP address but a /64
subnet. It is only when you have a /64 (or larger) that SLAAC can
operate and fulfil its role. For the non-nerdy customer letting SLAAC
operate is the simplest possible way of working.
Bottom line, the greatest difficulty in implementing IPv6 networks lays
not with the network hardware or software (though there are difficulties
enough in both) but with the wetware - us.
Collectively, we are the problem.
And that's why v6 network implementations will be problematic, requiring
time for proper testing and fine tuning.
Regards
Kevin.
