That used to be a peculiarity of the Australian amateur licensing rules
- it was forbidden to connect an amateur radio station to the PSTN. In
theory, it was designed to prevent non-amateurs using amateur radio
transmitters (i.e. Internet -> RF) without authorisation. In practice,
IMHO it was designed to stop amateurs from using their equipment and
bands to bypass Telecom landlines and set up their own networks back
when STD was a big thing.

My allocation - 44.136.204.77 has been IPIP tunnelled from the
Mirrorshades gateway for about 12 years, but I've noticed that my my
ISP's (iiNet) ISP has started to silently drop my traffic once it hits
the 'states. May be it has something to do with the move to BGP... I
don't know.

It's great to see BGP being permitted on the AMPR network now, though.
