AARNET has the pdf of their book of the history of the Australian Internet in multiple sections, which is inconvenient to read these days on a tablet etc.

http://www.employees.org/~lwood/aarnet-20-years-internet-australia-glenda-korporaal.pdf

has the pdf stitched together in 130 pages, as a single huge 36MB download, suitable for reading on iPads. It's really a glossy coffee table book, not phone/mobi friendly. Could have made it a faster download by zipping the pdf, but then iPads etc. wouldn't open it easily... Putting the book up for free on Kindle/iBooks stores would probably be a good idea for AARnet.

Given the source, the text is a bit single-player corporate self-serving brochurish rather than dispassionate historical all-sides-and-considered-context, but still an interesting read when you're aware of that filter.

a timely pullquote from p. 107: "After the November 2007 election, Prime Minister Rudd signalled his recognition of the digital economy in Australia when he appointed Stephen Conroy as the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy."

Well, I gather Rudd is still prime minister, of course, but Conroy has just resigned. Interesting times.

Hey all,

For anyone who is interested in the history of the Internet in Australia, AARNET commissioned a book entitled "AARNet: 20 Years of the Internet in Australia 1989–2009" by Glenda Korporaal

You can download the PDF of the book from the AARNET website @ http://www.aarnet.edu.au/about-us/publications/aarnet-book

Incidentally, she is my wife's (Shanti Korporaal) Aunty.  Such a small world.
