[AusNOG] 10G CPE (1RU?) recommendations?

If you don't require the full BGP routing table to actually be injected than the 4500-x may work for you, MPLS support is also an issue.

I can confirm it meets the rest of your requirements as well as full IPv6 support. We take the full IPv6 and IPv4 route table from BGP but we also receive a default route, meaning only the default route and internal OSPF routes are injected into CEF (which is where the limitation is)

Netflow is also supported quite well, however be aware that BGP routing information can't be included in the netflow exports at this time (I have requested this from Cisco but if I'm the only one asking it's unlikely) - Everything else you could need from Netflow is there.

It also runs IOS XE which gives you embedded wireshark, though I'm yet to actually get around to figuring that one out so I cant comment too much.

The base model provides 16 10gb SFP ports, you can scale this up to 24 with an add in card. It's got dual power supplies, tonnes of fans and in general is a pretty slick piece of gear.

It has downsides however, other than the above mentioned points, it requires all but 1 fan to be operational at all times, if you lose two it'll shut down so make sure you are monitoring it :)

Thanks,
Ayden Beeson

Doesn't sound like a dis-similar requirement and functionality to Megaport 'CPE', perhaps going down similar routes (heh), given Bev and CO would have spent a lot of time and money optimising their fabric.

G'day Ausnoggers,

Apologies if you see this twice - i had tried to send it out on Friday but haven't seen it come through.

Can you provide input or a recommendation for a 10Gbps CPE ?

The current CPE is a Cisco ME3400 which is used to deliver 1Gbps access. There might be a reason to standardise the 10G and 1G platform onto the same type of device in the future.

The base requirements are:

- Layer2/3
- Support OSPF and BGP for IP Routing
- SNMP support
- ACLs

The expectation for the 10G CPE is to support throughput of > 1G (but not necessarily full line rate at 10G).

A large number of 10G ports is not necessarily a requirement (or a bonus..) - anywhere from 2 or 4 ports would be more than sufficient.

Also the ability to deal with lots of sessions is more important than high throughput (above 1Gbit..)

Happy to summarize the results - I've already searched through the previous (Ausnog) CPE thread and the usual places like whirlpool in case there was anything relevant there..

regards,

-jason
