The good bit about that is I could deploy routeros without the mikrotik router and virtualize it in a HA or FT arrangement to give it some redundancy...

I'll have a look at the routeros api tonight

Further to this, RouterOS (Which is what most/all MikroTik routers run) also has a comprehensive API that you could have a basic UI developed on to for user friendly and basic operation focus.
