Hi,

It is very easy to say 'bad government'/LE/etc' without knowing the facts, also hard to implement blocking while being transparent without making a public list of sites that people would then visit. (e.g. give a list of sites you should not visit to the general user, how many would then visit those sites just from being told they should not?)

Transparency is a nice ideal, but would having a public list of 'bad sites' also not also a bad idea? I see no way of resolving that issue between people who are for & against filtering. It cannot be public so we unfortunately have to have some trust in someone somewhere. Maybe some knowledge on who is doing this and why may allow some trust in that source to be increased? (currently it's a black helicopter with MIB kind of arrangement which doesn't work)

All I can see is that it must be very hard to filter web traffic without using transparent proxies or DPI (first I think users don't want, 2nd that is expensive for the ISP, could be wrong, I'm not involved in doing either).

DNS filtering may be in cases ineffective, how many web hosts provide a <ip>/~<site> address for 'temporary' access that is always available, if that was being used DNS filtering would not have any impact. As everyone else seems to be guessing I am just putting another guess out there. I doubt there would be a block unless there was a legitimate reason and very highly doubt the block is 'political'.

I personally am on the fence about filtering, leaning more towards it being in place in a basic form (DNS filtering sounds good to me, with IP filtering if avoided of that is attempted) to protect us from some of the absolutely awful stuff that is out there on the internet.

While for myself personally I would prefer not to be filtered, it's not just about me, I have a daughter (as many other Australian's have children) and I have the knowledge to setup my own filters to protect her; but also know that other people who will be allowing her access to the internet do not have those skills to do so.

If filtering was abused it would be bad, but doubt our government would get away with it without the majority of us knowing, just look at how much of a stink this one occurrence has caused! With how connected we are we would find out about it in other ways such as news in other countries and if that was filtered there would certainly be an uproar!

If government interception was involved any parties cooperating wouldn't be able to say anything. Why won't the end user move another service and see if the block follows them.

The sad thing is the real culprit site has more than likely already moved to another IP, leaving all these legit sites up the creek. It's the piracy/DRM argument all over again :(
