Hi Qui,
If this deployment is for a single environment (like the Sydney Opera House), then I would recommend that you look at Xirrus Wireless Arrays and the Ruckus products. These solutions use dynamic radio and antenna management, together with beam-forming, to get into nooks and crannies better than most conventional WAPs. The pricing looks more expensive, but becomes competitive when you consider the cost of cabling and switch ports.
If you are considering Cisco, have you looked at the 2500, 2600 and 3500 series APs? For conventional APs, 40-50 users per AP would be a good planning number.
As for bandwidth, in that situation I would allow between 30 and 60 kbps per user - so 30-60 Mbps for the Internet service, but this can get out of control if you cannot restrict traffic to just social media sites.
Also keep in mind that the emerging 802.11ac standard will be appearing over the next 12 months. So, you need to decide if 802.11ac is relevant to you and, if it is, take a closer look at those products that are upgradable or have a clear migration path.
Cheers,
Rick

Subject: [AusNOG] Maximum users per AP
Hi All,
We have a request for providing wifi accesses to a large number of users say 1000 users mainly using social application such as , facebook , twitter etc.
Just wondering if anyone could advise what is the maximum users can a Cisco AP Wifi air-lap1142N can support.
And what is acceptable bandwidth to support 1000 users.
Thanks
QL
