Unfortunately the unwashed masses do not yet equate un-secured wireless points with leaving their doors unlocked...

That said surely a much more blanket community announcement would be a better way to educate said masses. With the point being made to contact a reputable IT company for consultation if the skills are lacking in-house or if uncertain about best practice.

Agreed. Wardriving and then doing a mailbox dump in the area just sounds like a stupid solution to the problem.

Why aren't they wandering around trying to see if peoples doors are unlocked.

"The project was officially launched yesterday<http://qpsmedia.govspace.gov.au/2012/03/22/war-driving-project-to-help-prevent-identity-theft/> to coincide with National Consumer Fraud Week.
Officers in the Hi Tech Crime Investigation Unit on wardriving missions will drive the streets of Brisbane with a laptop computer, looking for unsecured Wi-Fi networks.
Residents and businesses owners in targeted areas will then be mailed information about how to effectively secure their connection.
Police will return to the area some time later to check whether residents have taken heed of the warning.
