It definitely has potential but is still a V1 product.
If you are seriously considering cloud storage you should have a look at connecting something like a Riverbed Whitewater to a selection of could providers(including S3) or OpenStack & Atmos API's.

Amazon have recently released their Storage Gateway cloud offering, exposing a cloud-hosted copy of a block device:

In its current form you point disks at the locally hosted virtual appliance, and it exports an iSCSI target to mount on your application host - it will keep a copy in the cloud and supports snapshotting.
Future iterations promise to offer a cached client, so you don't need to hold all the data on-site.
Interesting solution, haven't had a chance to play with it - but would be keen to hear from anyone who has.
