Wrong question. A better question would be what protocols didn't
use a new type because DNS control panels didn't support it. SPF[1],
DKIM come to mind.
It's a enabling technology. If a protocol developer can be assured
that people can add and retrieve records without having to upgrade
everything to support the new type it make choosing a new type more
attractive solution.
[1] TXT was using initially and by the time a type was allocated it was
effectively too late.
