most likely someone learnt something reading about the shenanigans that
some folks have got up to with bgp origin-as and countermeasures to that
from a thread in nanog last week.

likely they 'fixed' their problem and net-net traffic to/from you isn't
using their network mel/syd but instead you're now footing that bill.
