Hey everyone,
As we get close to "World IPv6 Launch Day" in 2 days, the media is
producing a lot of stories related to IPv6, most of which contain
inaccuracies - as usual - when it comes to matters of complex technical
issues.
The biggest one so far has been saying that the world is transitioning' to
IPv6 - on Wednesday.... this doesn't make it easy to explain to users.
Comments like "Web has officially run out of existing IP addresses" and "World
to make the switch on to IPv6, Wednesday" from:
http://www.news.com.au/technology/internet-address-system-set-for-major-upgrade/story-e6frfro0-1226382251935
or
examples.
This sort of reporting has already had a reaction from consumers with at
least several reports that have filtered back to me where people have
phoned their ISPs and asked why they "hadn't been informed about this
change".
Please be prepared if you receive any calls like this - call centre staff
may need to be updated on this issue.
We know in situations like this, people get confused and panic and want to
know what is going on. Please be patient with your users - they are being
told about this thing called 'IPv6', yet they don't actually even know the
term 'IPv4' yet.
The easiest thing might be just to tell customers that this wont affect
them for at least a year, and that LONG before it will, they will be
contacted.
