I'm not sure why. As I mentioned previous the really big boys have
been using HTTP(S) LBs running on Linux/FBSD for a good number of
years. You get to pick your interface cards, your SSL accelerator
cards and run a modern stack on a familiar platform. There's a lot to
like.
If your business relies on vendor support, then a proprietary solution
is arguably your only choice, but if you have in-house or near-house
expertise then a commodity solution isn't as unusual as it sounds.
