So that when your authoritative servers get pummeled, your recursive servers don't, and vice versa.  Separating out authoritative servers into internal and external resolvers is also a BCP (see the diagram).

Your recursive servers can and will get pummeled by botted hosts within your networks and/or those of your customers.
