[AusNOG] Fwd: [luv-talk] Optus 3G charges while using wifi at home.

I call BS on Optus' part. Just another support monkey that doesn't
understand how things really work. What they said doesn't make any
sense, and needs to be fixed so that more consumers aren't misled.

If your phone is configured to use wi-fi, and it actually is and no
data is touching the Optus network, I don't see how they can conclude
that you are using data - unless you are, or by some sort of mistake.

If they are recording data usage against the account, then I would
suggest that perhaps the phone was not using wi-fi like you thought,
in which case there might be issues with the phone or perhaps coverage
of your AP to where the phone was being used. Maybe it dropped off
wi-fi through interference from another AP, or saw another stronger AP
with the same SSID and tried to connect to that instead.

Either way I think disabling 3G from Optus side is probably a good
idea, particularly if you don't intend for that service to make use of
it. I would also disable mobile data on the phone itself.

I just recently had to get my parents to turn data off on their new
phone, because they don't (AFAIK) have a data plan associated with
their SIM. They just stuck it in the phone and started using it,
unaware that they were racking up data - it shouldn't have been much,
my Dad just signed in with his google account, but still, I am hoping
the bill wont be too bad... Mobile data is a mine field.
