Public welcome—no entry charge

Over recent times we have seen large scale disconnection from the Internet, country-wide domain name and application blocking, domain name seizures, content filtering and talk of an Internet kill switch. How do we separate the reality and effectiveness of what is possible from media reports and political dreams? In this talk Narelle will review the technical accounts and analysis of recent events and pose some questions on the potential for Australia and the region.

Narelle Clark is an Internet and telecoms specialist with over 20 years experience. As a board member of the global Internet Society Narelle has formed close connections with Internet users, operators and activists around the world. ISOC is the organisational home of the IETF, IAB and IANA and also operates the *.org domain through its Public Interest Registry, and actively contributes to the development of Internet related policy around the world.

Narelle is also Vice President of the Australian Chapter of the Internet Society, a member of the IEEE and its Communications Society, and has degrees in physics, engineering and management.

Founded in 1992, the Internet Society (ISOC) is a nonprofit organisation to provide leadership in Internet related standards, education and policy, and has over 80 chapters around the world.

The Society on Social Implications of Technology (SSIT) is part of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, a 400,000-member worldwide organistion of engineers and other technologists. Its motto is “Advancing Technology for Humanity”.
