To everyone who has responded a big thank you. I had a really cool option provided, but as is almost always the case the device got to me after too many incorrect entries and the iPod was permanently disabled. Couldn't get it to be detected by either the PC or iTunes. Shot down!
Full restore I'm afraid. iCloud can't come soon enough! :)

PS: I was reminded that the hack in iOS 4 was to make calls from the iPhone not access data contained therein.
