[AusNOG] Flooding in Rockhampton - What can AUSNOG do?

Hi,

While I think it is a nice idea I would be worried what it would do to
Ausnog in the future if it resulted in lower numbers and that negatively
impacted its finances.

Also, how much would it really help? Would most of what we spend go to a
national/multi-national corp for the event or actually help out the
local population?

Apologies for being negative, but I would not want to see Ausnog trying
to help a group of people and cause issues for the conference itself or
for the money spent to have little local impact, no matter how good the
intensions.

Having said that I would like to go somewhere new, was thinking of
asking if I could skip Ausnog this year and go to NZNog instead to check
out what's similar and what is different (along with maybe taking a bit
of a holiday to do some hiking)

Steve

Hi Nogger's,

Now this maybe an impractical request, but it's one I would like the
Ausnog community to consider. As some would know I am a Rocky old boy
(and so is Steve Baxter). In fact my first job was working at
Rockhampton City Council. The people of Central Queensland are doing it
tough at the moment and will do so for some time. I still have a few
friends in Council up there and I spoke to the Mayor yesterday and
offered any support I could provide.

One of the points the Mayor made was that everything is being done, that
can be done, but one thing he thought would really help is for
Australian's to know that Rockhampton/CQ will get back on its feet and
is open for business. I couldn't help but feel that one thing that
would be great is that if there was an "industry" event up in
Rockhampton - and AUSNOG came to mind. I really appreciate that
Rockhampton is out of the way and that many people that go to Ausnog do
so locally from Sydney.

But I want to ask, would AUSNOG be interested in hosting AUSNOG in
Rockhampton this year? If people were interested, I would be happy to
see if we could get a semi-sponsored direct charter from Sydney to
Rockhampton for a reduced fee, and I'd personally be happy to charter a
boat for a day trip to Great Keppel Island for attendees. Maybe we
could have it at Rydges resort at Yeppoon? I'm sure the Mayor could
give a presentation on disaster management and a few telco folks give a
run down on how telecommunications were affected and how it operated
during the disaster and thereafter.

I'm just reaching out with an idea and wondering if the friends of
Rockhampton can come half way (commercially) would this industry be able
to do the same? I understand there would be inconvenience and
additional cost, but would Nogger's (and their bosses) be prepared to do
that for the greater good?

Over to everyone...

Cheers
