Nothing new or magical I expect, just old fashioned detective work.

If you send an email from your home IP address, or supply real credentials to M$ when you sign up, or link your email address to say your facebook or linkedin profile etc etc, then you are pretty easy to trace (Esp for law enforcement officers who can request info from ISP's or Microsoft etc).

If you set up your account whilst wearing a groucho nose and glasses using bogus details over TOR from a web cafe in Tashkent then it would take considerably more time, and resources to track you down.

Subject: [AusNOG] Tracking Hotmail messages - claim from company this can be done

Morning Noggers,

I just heard an interview on Neil Mitchell's program with Susan McLean (Cyber Safety Solutions), who claims her company tracks Hotmail email messages to the source / person.

I'm surprised someone would say this in the media as it's often near impossible to trace free email address messages (unless it's blatently obviously who the sending party is).

Am I missing something here? Has someone developed a magical technology or permission to trace these messages?

Regards,
