[AusNOG] conroy reaffirms commitment to filter

The LAST thing we need is something hiding on the internet, carefully informing those already in the know just how astoundingly bad, how amazingly detrimental to this industry this policy is.
The key problem we have here is that *nobody* but industry insiders actually care about the issue.
We recently have had an extremely clear example of how to get the message out over what an entire industry sees as a catastrophically bad government policy, we just need to make it a reality for our specific circumstance.
This requires airtime, lots of it, full of a definitively clear message of how *stunningly* disastrous this will be for "the internet" in Australia.
Hyperbole and overhyped *extreme worst cases* are exactly what needs to be said.
Phrases emotionally equivalent to "I do not support an opt-in for child pornography" need to be used.
It needs to be a graphic, emotionally driven, soul-destroying picture of a dystopia from out of our collective worst nightmares.
The general public need to understand that it's not *just* a matter of what the govt *claims* this will be used for - today - but what future scope this empowers for future governments to have *absolute* control over what you do or do not see on the internet.

The last thing the government needs now is the public perception that they are killing another Australian industry.
Possibly it is the time to speak loudly.
I do agree with your fundamental point though,

Conroy doesn't care. We're not the votes he's looking for. He's not able to deal with rational argument or reason on this matter. Clearly and his advisors don't care about what people like Mark Newton and others have presented in terms of how useless this whole concept it is.
Fundementally the problem is that politicians globally are feeling threatened by the internet and are trying to control it and bend it to their will. This is just one aspect of it.

Hi Noggers,
How about we build an industry web portal which represents our collective view specifically relating to the Filter.
Then, we collect signatures on a petition and have them presented to Mr Conroy.
We should also seek SME advice which can be added to the petition, so the Minister can see just how ineffective this filter is going to be (at our cost of course).
I am sure we could ask our journalist friends on this list to assist with spreading the word and letting the Government know that this is not going to get past without consultation.
My 2c.

We don't really have a union to represent us.
If we do I've never heard of them, which means they aren't doing a good enough job getting the message out there.

Unfortunately the change in leadership looks to not have changed the

My question what are we 'as an industry' going to do about it?
The miners made the claim their jobs were at stake; rather, the mine _owners_. Are any large ISPs threatening they'll have to go under - destroying jobs - if this legislation is passed? If no-one wants to even bluff, I guess we're SOL.
