Ouch. Someone’s going to lose their jobs.

Meanwhile, angry lotto outlets have lashed Telstra after a fault crashed computers and froze ticket purchases for the jackpot.

Thousands of Victorian punters were knocked back in the busy lunchtime rush when the Tatts computer system was paralysed, the Herald Sun reports.

Frustrated businesses that had put on extra staff said the debacle was expected to cost millions of dollars in lost sales statewide.

Tens of thousands of office workers and home computer users are also believed to have lost high-speed internet when Telstra hardware failed from 1.20pm (AEST). Hospitals, government departments and bank services relying on the telco's data network were also hit.

Werribee Plaza Lotto agency owner Kevin Ung said the system crashed during a critical ticket rush.

"I lost a minimum of 300 customers in 20 minutes," Mr Ung said.

"It's been non-stop all day. And then they just put the brake on it. Bang."

Tatts spokeswoman Bianca Green said the fault had come at the worst possible time.

The Oz Lotto jackpot was the biggest prize on offer since last July's $80 million Powerball draw, which was shared by a Melbourne man and a NSW punter.

Victoria's 750 Tatts agencies resorted to selling pre-printed syndicates during their 1 1/2-hour system meltdown yesterday.

Outlets in Tasmania, the ACT and Northern Territory were also hamstrung.

Telstra spokesman Craig Middleton confirmed some of Telstra's larger customers in Victoria were offline from 45 minutes to 2 1/2 hours. Services were progressively restored from 2.30pm, and all were back on line by 3.45pm.

Some customers could be entitled to compensation, Mr Middleton said.
