[AusNOG] 2-Way IP Satellite backhaul: who, how, what, where, how much?

Nog,
It's been a long time coming, but I need to multiple sites across Australia which happen to be in the middle of nowhere for a particular client which digs stuff out of the ground (and will soon pay heavily for the privilege). What are my options? It'll be carrying bulk data, nothing latency sensitive, contention is no issue, no voice.
I'd be interested in multiple options: I'm not sure I want a managed satellite WAN as I am seeing significant growth in our regional operations, so it'd be great to have the flexibility to turn up services independently - is this even possible with a satellite provider? How does this work?
K-band, Ku-Band, C-band: what does it matter? What difference does it make?
Are these services usually handed off via Ethernet? Is it possible to install a small teleport on our roof? I am not sure how possible, practical or affordable the latter is, but it would sure as anything make our tours more impressive ;)
Warning: I am a satellite virgin. I understand terrestrial communications, but anything I can't attach to a mast is beyond my scope of knowledge. I assume it's pretty similar in some respects.
Regards,
Curtis
