Just to followup on this "for the record", the issues turned out to be a conflict between the Cisco IPSec client and an old (and no longer used) installation of Parallels Desktop. Go figure. Worked fine on all other internet connections just not over the 3G. I retract all those hurtful things I've mumbled under my breath about Vodafone 3G over the past couple of days :)

Only problem is that I can't hold up an IPSec VPN over it. Tried native IPSec and also IPSec over UDP. Spoke to Vodafone and they swapped my account onto a public IP address (nice to have) but still no go. They tell me that as it's not a Vodafone VPN they don't support it. Tried to explain that it's normal Internet VPN and it works over every other internet connection I have. No dice. They just don't get it - even the escalation guy didn't know what IPSec was.
