You need the way back machine to a time when people didn't trust
all MTA's to support MX records, SRV records didn't exist and HTTP
was this new fangled protocol.

Using "www." was a way to signal that you supported http. It also
provided a way to seperate http from email at a time when email
servers were deemed much more critical that http which was often
run on the side. Often the question was "can we safely run smtp
and http on the one box" and the answer was often "no".
