[AusNOG] Gillard promises video doctors with NBN

Yep.. I worked on a similar project about 5-6 years ago plumbing broadband into all GP's homes, surgery's, offices, hospitals etc ... all done over DSL, E1 & Satellite links, this was done in a regional part of WA. I believe it was a bit of a test pilot for Cisco to show the world that it can be done even in "the outback".

Politicians seem to think we are still living in the dark ages.

More info on the network I worked on is available here;

...we will also ignore the fact that we (SONET and my previous employers) been doing video conferencing over ISDN both nationally and internationally since 2003 - I even have an 128k ISDN hardware VC unit that runs on a bastardized version of Windows 3.11.

It used to be owned by Mincom I think.

That particular unit was made in 1996 ;)

Oh don't get me wrong - I fully support anything that can actually benefit the health and well-being of Australians.

I just think it's a bit optimistic to have plans to spend so much money on the 1st term when so much is being spent already.

In time though, after the dust settles I would certainly be more welcoming to such funding for the medical sector.

I just don't want Australia to go broke :P

Andrew.

This is actually a really good service.
You can learn more about it from one of my clients sites : http://www.teledr.com.au/
It's also only extending the services which are offered by a GP to people in remote areas who can't get to them.

What's the use of a super NBN (what every form the "pony" takes) if we don't embrace the tech that uses it ??
