We are seeing download3.vmware.com via Equinix Peering although the IP
address appears to be different:

I can see routes over PiPE but our BGP is preferring Equinix Peering because
we have so much of it J

Lucky you - for me it ends up across peering in Tokyo. Akamai do strange
things - I suspect if you understood what was happening your head would
explode.
