Aggregating large amounts of diverse workloads of almost any nature
onto "shared compute infrastructure" does work. A large VMware farm
isn't just "running multiple servers on one physical bit of kit".
It's a shared, flexible pool of resources that can be allocated almost
at whim to whoever needs it, or is paying for it, at any point in time.

And naturally I'm not speaking from an "internal IT" perspective.
It's pretty public info that WebCentral / MelbourneIT has moved
heavily into virtualising suitable workloads. I'm only tangentially
involved with that part of the infrastructure, but it works, and it
works very well.
