[AusNOG] If you need an authorised Cabler for Globalswitch

Interesting cabling broker idea.. I wonder ;-)
I've been looking at trying to put together a map of Globalswitch (with
their co-operation) mainly detailing the rooms and primary cable runs so it
would make it easier for parties to figure out where they are and the costs
perhaps associated with interconnection.
It would probably not be wise to specifically detail the location of parties
unless they were happy to do so, but key providers like Pipe Networks would
surely be happy to detail their major interconnection points and cage areas.
I have a map which details some aspects.. and will redo it in Visio soon and
make it available so that parties who are interested can provide the details
of where they are to make it easier for those who want to interconnect. Is
this worthwhile doing for Equinix? Probably not as xconnects are handled by
them.
If anyone wants any low capacity VLAN's between Level 2 North and South and
Level 4 North, then several of my customers would probably be interested in
providing cheap VLAN's between locations. let me know if anyone needs
something.
Also, for any parties outside Sydney, we already provide services to a
number of ISPS's where equipment is shipped to us, stripped of packaging (no
place to dispose at GS), configured according to requirements (sometimes
just ILO, sometimes a basic install) and then installed into racks in GS or
Equinix and remote-hands as required. We have half a dozen staff inducted
into both Globalswitch and Equinix DC's with specific access to areas being
arranged as required. If anyone needs this sort of service, please contact
me.

It maybe too late now that it's almost full, but one wonders if you could
build a business as a cabler by purchasing two racks (MMR1, 2) and running
cables (probably mainly fibre in GS) from each end of a xconnect to your
racks rather than direct and then being able to sell xconnects by the month
(ie. first xconnect pays for the cabling, second, third hopefully ride for
free as you can just patch inside your racks).
Just need a quick ordering/billing system and probably a systematic way of
labeling each fibre tray and being able to do it at low cost so you don't
burn TOO much. Maybe an exclusive deal contract so people don't use you
only for expensive runs. At $100/month for a fibre xconnect it's probably
a doable business as long as you have a bit of cash to burn to start up.
Bonus points for offering remote hands, shipping and box disposal.

Hey all,
I regularly get asked if I know anyone who is approved to do cabling
in Globalswitch. There are a few, but some are expensive, while others are
incompetent.
We've been using someone new - Fibre Dart - who has already done a
number of jobs for us and other ISP's in GS with excellent results and
pricing. They've also gotten to know the site pretty well and know the
procedures on how to get things done.
They have all the right licences etc and are also electricians as
well as master cablers and so on. The biggest job they did for us was
cabling an entire hall at Darling Harbour Exhibition Centre for the World
Youth Day media centre which involved cat5/6, fibre and copper (PSTN/ISDN)
and the whole thing went perfectly.
Yes this is a bit of a plug, but I get asked so regularly that I
thought these lists could use another contact for someone who does good
work.
