Bandwidth saved is still bandwidth saved. The problem _I_ heard (a few years
ago now) is that the cost of traffic saved wasn't enough to justify the expensive
proxy caches.
I keep hearing people throw around numbers like "squid caches <10% of HTTP traffic now!"
when my customers seem to be indicating they're seeing >30% byte HTTP savings.
Getting actual figures is difficult..
