<div dir="ltr">Yes. I have.<div><br></div><div>But - there's a lot more to it that just standing for a seat. Remember you have to represent the entire demographic, unfortunately IT/comms issues don't pay the bills, keep people employed, keep businesses interested, represent all the people and their problems etc. Plus you need policies, money to run, campaign, time off to work the streets/people etc. And then if you do get elected, you may or may not make a difference to the policy of the government at the time.</div><div><br></div><div>This is basically why lobby groups do such a good job. They're not in politics, but they are in with politics. They do damn good jobs of taking their concerns (industry, company, opinions etc) and get in front of the people that matter. If they spend enough time making the right sort of noise in front of the right sort of people, they can influence decision. Granted a lot of those people are paid to do that job, but like all things if you're paid you can concentrate on the task at hand more than a volunteer (speaking from experience).</div><div><br></div><div>Just being realistic. Both sound easy but there's a bit of work involved. Not saying people shouldn't do either, personally I would love to see a lobby group involved in Australian politics for the IT and Communications sector. Ideally they could restore some 'sense' into government and government department's decision making on oh so many levels.</div><div><br></div><div>Michael Keating</div><div><br></div><div><br></div></div><div class="gmail_extra"><br><div class="gmail_quote">On Wed, Sep 16, 2015 at 11:21 AM, Seamus Ryan <span dir="ltr"><<a href="mailto:Seamus.Ryan@melbourneit.com.au" target="_blank">Seamus.Ryan@melbourneit.com.au</a>></span> wrote:<br><blockquote class="gmail_quote" style="margin:0 0 0 .8ex;border-left:1px #ccc solid;padding-left:1ex">Crazy thought.<br>

Anyone on this list (or industry) ever considered entering into politics?<br>
<br>
My vote at election time is based entirely on what benefits the industry I work in (ie communications). I have no kids nor family, so most of the other policies are not taken into consideration when I enter the booth. This may be short sighted and shallow, but that’s the way it is for me given my current position. Of course this could change at any time.<br>
If tomorrow I woke up to find an intelligent, respected and well known telco figure had been given the job of Communications Minister, chances are that party would get my vote. This is based solely on the slight possibility that they may have a tiny bit of sway in the party to improve infrastructure for our nation.<br>

Crazy thought, I know.<br>
