Degrees are optional in networking team. Obviously preferred but not required. We focus on quality individuals and we've got quiet a few without degrees or degrees in the non-computing areas.

I have mixed feelings about certifications, imho they don't carry the weight that they once did, with the proliferation of testking and the like, its entirely possible to get certification without experience, hard knocks and real lessons in engineering/operations.

If i had network engineer in my titled, i'd hopefully understand the statements below.

* 1+1 = 10; this makes sense to you and why.

* You understand how to IP subnet in your head, calculator not needed. e.g. you know how many ip addresses in /22 without really thinking too hard.

If you understand below, You're probably more prepared to the required skills changes coming into the industry that was highlighted at the last Ausnog in the evolution of of a 'network engineer'

0.2+0.1 = 0.30000000000000004

None of the above is difficult or complicated concepts.

Very rarely are good people sitting around, unemployed or not paid their worth.... otherwise they wouldn't be good. If they don't have common sense in life looking after themselves, they probably can't do it in their professional roles either.

There are also different kinds of people:

1. Raw talent with some experience (no certs or degrees)

2. Those who follow certification

3. Those with degrees (often with certs) but rarely with any experience.

Personally, in our space, I place no value on degrees at all.. They're just not the kind of people we need. In Networking, we do care about certs, or favour those willing to get them. This is only partly about the skill aspect, and more about vendor partner requirements which can help with purchasing discounts and so on - but some certs are just very good, like the new Juniper JNCSP range... excellent exams.

The guys from 1. above are good, and in some fields, certs don't matter... but they're often the hardest working of all as they know they need to prove themselves. The younger they are, the harder they are to manage. Never think a $35k guy is a good deal... you will spend another $10k-$15k just in managing them. Any GenY's and iGen's also come with their own particular way of (not) working, and management overheads.

Phillip... do you focus on a particular group, or does it depend on the role, or do you have some minimums?
