I've also noted what I consider to be a couple of nasty security deficiencies at the Soul/TPG facility in Dryburgh St, North Melbourne...

1. The electromag door locks on the front door are insufficient for the physical door construction and could be physically pulled open.

2. What appears to be the copper MDF is uncaged and free-standing in the middle of the room (eg. you can just walk up to it...)

3. The cage locks use a poor-quality wafer mechanism that can be easily bypassed. I forgot a cage key one day and walked through it in about 7 seconds.

4. An access request submitted with incorrect information was accepted and used to gain site access.

If there are any Soul/TPG punters on the list the things I mention above are relatively cheap and easy to address and buy you a load of security value.
All sorted. Josh was referring to the TPG (former Comindico) DC at
level 10, 100 Wickham (Valley), not PIPE DC3 at 148 Brunswick Street
Thanks Josh for checking into it and clarifying it. I am relieved!
Although maybe not so good for those at TPG 100 Wickham (not to be
Understand Josh. But "Compare that to the PIPE DC in Fortitude Valley
(where there's one key that can open every cabinet, and it's left on a
shelf you can just grab...) " is in my opinion a false misleading and
potentially slanderous statement.

Many on this list have a presence there and *ALL* standard racks don't

even have the option of a key as they were exclusively electronic. I've
discussed this internally with some former PIPE people and neither the
old or new centralised rack locking systems have an ability for a key so
I'm just struggling with how any key could possibly have any use in DC3.
Happy to stand corrected though.
Yeah – that’s pretty offensive and bordering on slanderous. Centralised
electronic rack locking was installed day one too all standard racks
integrated on the proximity cards (with readers at the end of the rows).
There may have been some racks with temporary keys at times due to
immediate customer demand prior to locking being provisioned within the
normal timeframes. I understand they have performed a full upgrade of
the centralised electronic rack locking system in recent times too.

And yes there are numerous security access points prior to enter the
data centre floor and whilst it isn't a NEXTDC quality facility, it is
much more robust than you suggest.
We’ve clearly been to different PIPE DC’s in Fortitude Valley Josh. If
you’re describing DC3 then the racks are opened remotely using relay’s
triggered by PIPE staff remotely and there are 2 security doors you have
to pass through to get to any racks within the facility. It’s not a
high class facility by any stretch of the imagination but a key on a
shelf is making it seem a little worse than it actually is.
If you're willing to look outside the CBD, Fujitsu run a DC in Eight
follow procedure. (no cardboard/static materials allowed, power
We've been investigating data centres for the past few months, but
haven't moved in yet, so take this opinion with the appropriate salt dosage.

I think iSeek at Eagle Farm is a slightly better quality facility than
NextDC due to the more spacious building and larger diesel supply. Cost
in getting to them is a problem, but one could easily argue that it's
worth it (we certainly did when presenting the options to our CEO).
