What would they be preserving? The iPhone handset is just another bit<BR>
of CPE a customer can use to access their network, right? Why would<BR>
they care?<BR>

I think they're charging for it because they can. No great mystery there. <BR>

Perhaps they think most users are too unsophisticated to do it themselves.<BR>
If that's the case, there's probably an opening for some third party to start a <BR>
business which advertises tethering for Optus customers for $8 per month.<BR>
