[AusNOG] Latency NZ to Sydney

It depends on the NZ-AU path the provider uses, in my experience -

Sydney - Auckland:

1. Via Southern Cross - 23ms
2. Via TGA - 25ms
3. Via Hawaiki - 35ms

Auckland - Wellington adds about 10ms rtt

These are core network speeds, end user connectivity of course depends on the medium chosen. Of course FTTH is becoming ubiquitous now in NZ so a few of ms would be normal.

Here's a ping from a server at home (Auckland/Gig FTTH/Southern Cross) to a server in Equinix Sydney.

[root at nostromo ~]# ping sulaco
PING sulaco.wicks.co.nz (27.100.36.13) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from sulaco.wicks.co.nz (27.100.36.13): icmp_seq=1 ttl=49 time=26.3 ms
64 bytes from sulaco.wicks.co.nz (27.100.36.13): icmp_seq=2 ttl=49 time=26.5 ms
64 bytes from sulaco.wicks.co.nz (27.100.36.13): icmp_seq=3 ttl=49 time=26.5 ms
64 bytes from sulaco.wicks.co.nz (27.100.36.13): icmp_seq=4 ttl=49 time=26.5 ms
64 bytes from sulaco.wicks.co.nz (27.100.36.13): icmp_seq=5 ttl=49 time=26.5 ms
^C
--- sulaco.wicks.co.nz ping statistics ---
5 packets transmitted, 5 received, 0% packet loss, time 11ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 26.329/26.468/26.541/0.193 ms
