[AusNOG] IPv6 Reverse DNS, was: ISP DNS Options

There are a few vendors (including the one I work for, Infoblox) who provide IP Address Management solutions with tightly integrated DNS for v4 and v6. Some of these solutions offer very granular role based administration (which in Infoblox’s case extends to a RESTful API as well) which allows customers to manage their own v4 and v6 records. and provide scale and telco grade HA options.

Anyone who’d like to have a chat about this off list (so I don’t get in trouble for trying to do a sales pitch on-list) I’d be happy to provide some more details (virtualised product evals, real coffees, whiteboarding sessions, dancing girls, etc).

Suffice to say though, I believe that there is no reason why v4 and v6 DNS management can’t be easily provided to customers using the assigned space, and through the same user interface (centralised admin console, web portal, or API) DHCPv4 and DHCPv6 records also updated where the provider is the authoritative DNS or the provider is running multi-master DNS with the client.

I'd be more interested to know how people are solving the reverse DNS problem in IPv6.

Ideally customers should be able to self manage any static entries they have and have a fall back for everything else, with matching AAAA of course.

I just got an IPv6 PTR record done by Telstra and it took several weeks to provision.

I'm thinking of have a SQL database with PowerDNS (or ProBind) for the statics and LUA or Perl plugin for the dynamics.

Currently the BIND solution which is in place is working but we are wondering what people would suggest as a next step that is easy to manage and cost effective to implement and that can grow with the business to handle 20-50,000 services eventually.

 

Any advice would be appreciated.
